Hi there abach12,
I used to struggle with this but I now know what was happening:
The automatic negative thoughts that trigger anxiety are occurring subconsciously in your mind.
I'm not sure what sessions you are on in the therapy series, but you may remember Dr. Richards stating in the audio series that: "you must tell your brain, out loud, that you're having automatic negative thoughts, that they are unhealthy for you, and that you do not want to believe these lies (the ANTs) that trigger anxiety". When you do this repeatedly, your subconscious & conscious brain listens to what you tell it and will begin to follow your instructions to ignore the ANTs...but it takes consistent repetition for this to work.
I never understood this fully until I read the book: "Subsconsious - By: Leonard Mlodinow". Basically 95% of your thoughts occur in your subconscious mind, so you must influence that 95% of your mind by reading the handouts daily, using out loud stopping statements, and everything else the SAI therapy series instructs you to do. By doing that, you will be sending a repeated message into your subconscious that will eventually change that 95% of your mind...very powerful stuff!
Stick with it and follow the therapy series as Dr. Richards instructs....it definitely works! All it takes is a strong, lasting, consistent commitment. You can do it.
