I just finished reading a book called The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine Aron. Basically, its about how 15-20 percent of people are extra sensitive to social, physical, and emotional stimuli. I noticed that there is a lot of similarities between social anxiety and high sensitivity. HSP's are usually seen as shy, introverted, or socially inhibited. They seem unusually cautious in new situations. HSPs are often highly conscientious and tend towards perfectionism. HSPs are easily shaken up and distressed by changes. They may feel like misfits. As children HSP's are usually treated as if something is wrong with them. I could go on and on. There are so many similarities its hard for me to differentiate between the two. The one thing that is different is being highly sensitive is considered a neutral trait which has advantages and disadvantages. Where as social anxiety is considered a disorder. So do I have social anxiety disorder or am i an HSP?
