My oldest daughter has been going to the same daycare for almost four years. She's moved from room to room with several of the same kids and like her, many of those kids now have younger siblings. In this time, the teachers and parents have become familiar faces - whom I've been reluctant to talk with because of my anxiety.
Since starting the program in July or so, I have been able to slow down and approach situations more rationally and have been able to have longer and more meaningful conversations with some of the teachers and parents. Just today, I talked with one mother (the mom of our daughter's best friend) about getting our families together for a play date. In the past, I would have simply walked past her on my way out. But today, I stopped, got her attention, and struck up a conversation.
As one of the rational coping statements I selected says, "When this is over, I'll be glad I did it." And I am indeed glad.
